Our Scoring Methodology: How We Rate Beekeeping Equipment

Every product recommendation on this site is scored against the same five criteria. This page explains exactly how, so you can weigh our picks against your own priorities rather than taking a star rating on faith.

Our 5 Scoring Criteria

  • Climate suitability — how well the product performs in the specific zone(s) it’s recommended for (see weighting below)
  • Build quality & durability — material, construction, and resistance to warping, rust, or premature wear
  • Assembly & ease of setup — time and skill required to get the product hive-ready
  • Value — price relative to what’s actually included, not price alone
  • Cost-per-year-of-use — total price divided by realistic expected lifespan, so a pricier but longer-lasting product isn’t unfairly penalized

How We Weight Climate Suitability

Climate suitability is never averaged away. A product that scores well overall but is a poor fit for cold-winter overwintering will still be flagged as a poor fit for Zones 3–5, even if it’s our top pick for warmer zones. This is the core of how TheRightHive differs from a generic best-of list: climate fit is a filter, not just one factor among many.

How We Calculate Cost-Per-Year-of-Use

Formula: Total price ÷ expected years of useful life = cost-per-year. Expected lifespan is based on standard material benchmarks used across the beekeeping supply industry: painted pine woodenware typically lasts 7–10 years with routine maintenance (repainting as the coating wears), cedar woodenware — naturally more rot- and insect-resistant — commonly runs 15–20 years, and unfinished, unpainted pine left without a protective coating can deteriorate significantly faster, often within a few seasons, due to moisture exposure. We apply these general benchmarks consistently across every product in a given material category, and note explicitly on each page which benchmark was used.

What Disqualifies a Product

  • No longer available from a verifiable, reputable supplier
  • Missing basic safety features expected for its category (e.g., a suit with no verified sting-resistant rating)
  • Manufacturer claims we can’t verify through the manufacturer’s own published specifications
